The inaugural Australian GP took place in 1928 at the Phillip Island road circuit. This event marked the beginning of a storied tradition, with Arthur Waite clinching victory in a modified Austin 7. Over the next decade, the race traversed various Australian states, gracing venues like Victor Harbor, Mount Panorama, and Lobethal. Notably, the 1938 race at Mount Panorama set the stage for Bathurst’s legendary motorsport status.

Post-War Developments

The post-war era saw the GP rotate among circuits such as Point Cook, Leyburn, and Narrogin. In 1956, Albert Park in Melbourne hosted the race, coinciding with the Summer Olympics. This event attracted European teams, with Stirling Moss securing victory in a Maserati 250F. The success of the 1956 race paved the way for Melbourne’s prominence in motorsport.

Transition to F1

The 1980s marked a pivotal shift as the Australian Grand Prix embraced F1 machinery. The 1980 race at Calder Park Raceway featured a mix of F1 and Formula 5000 cars, with Alan Jones emerging victorious. This transition culminated in 1985 when the GP became a permanent fixture on the F1e World Championship calendar.

Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit

Since 1996, the Australian Grand Prix has been held at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit, with exceptions in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 5.278 km circuit, constructed using public roads and parkland, offers a unique blend of speed and technical challenges. The inaugural race in Melbourne drew a record crowd of 401,000.

Recent Highlights

The 2024 Australian Grand Prix witnessed Carlos Sainz Jr. clinch victory, while the 2025 race saw Lando Norris triumph after a dramatic race that included a spin by home favorite Oscar Piastri. The 2025 event also set a new attendance record, with 465,498 spectators, making it Melbourne’s most attended sporting event.
